|Welcome to the final week of TAKE YOUR MEDICINE. This week begins with an overview of the role of regulations to ensure drug product quality.A former head of pharmaceutical manufacturing (North & South America), Ms. Christine Jacobs, will share her experience in ensuring manufacturing of quality medical products. You will also learn how drugs are scaled up from the lab to full production.
Dr. Marv Shepherd discusses the myriad factors that contribute to driving up the cost of drug products. Please note, much of this discussion is based on what is going on in the United States and may or may not be applicable where you live, but I think you will find it interesting, including the information about the role of patents and competition.
I talk about generic drug products, which now comprise more than 80% of prescriptions filled – which highlights the important role they play.
We will conclude this week and the course with a conversation about the importance of the commercialization of research innovations. Did you know that the majority of new drug innovations come from academic institutions and entrepreneurial startups?
